GALLERY HAPPENINGS July 2015

Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

During your visit to Moab, be sure to stop in at Gallery Moab to enjoy the variety of ways our local artists express their love of the intriguing redrock landscape. You’ll find paintings, photography, wood carvings, pottery, jewelry, metalwork, weavings, prints and cards, and more at this artist-owned cooperative gallery. It’s the perfect place to find a gift or memento, or to simply browse and be inspired by the art. New works by our member artists appear regularly, and each month we host a special guest artist.

July’s Guest Artist is Kathy Grossman. A southern California native transplanted to Moab, she has always enjoyed expansive landscapes. “Growing up at the ocean, I thrived on how far out you could see from my hometown pier. Looking out at desert vistas is much the same,” she explains. She has also lived in the United Arab Emirates, where she started to paint large, colorful figures with acrylics, expressing her fascination with Arab music, food, and dress and sun-blasted desert colors.

More recently, Grossman has been exploring flora and still life assemblages with pastel. She says “After using a brush for so many years where the pigment is applied to the surface ten inches from my hand, it’s both freeing and scary to hold the pigment right there in my fingers. I’m definitely stretching artistic muscles to work in dry and wet mediums.” Grossman’s creativity is not limited to art. She is also a talented writer, singer and song-writer.

Grossman’s paintings will be on display at Gallery Moab from July 10 through August 14. The gallery will host an artist’s reception for her on Saturday evening, July 11, from 6 to 9 p.m. Mosaic artist Kristi Peterson will also be featured. Her best-known work is the giant coffee cup in front of Eklecticafe, and she has also created a “healing garden” decorated with mosaic works at her home. At the gallery she displays a variety of smaller works, including colorful mosaic-embellished garden art, plaques, boxes, bowls and vases.

Mark your calendars for the Moab Artists Studio Tour on Labor Day weekend. A gala reception for participating artists at the Moab Music Festival Star Hall concert on Friday, September 4 will kick off the event. On Saturday and Sunday, the 5th and 6th, local artists will host open studios in Moab and Castle Valley. Gallery Moab will serve as the official hub, where information, maps and directions to the studios will be available.
