BUSINESS HAPPENINGS - February 2020

Full Service and More : South Town Gym
By Linda Schmidt

Moab’s South Town Gym opened in 2010, named for its location—the south end of Moab. Nick Oldroyd managed the gym from its beginning; in 2015, he and his wife Monica purchased it. Andrea Noyes came on board six years ago, and became its manger in 2017. The skill and energy of this dynamic team is impressive; their vision of a full service gym manifests itself in every aspect of the business.

Access to the gym is available on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis. Membership begins at the weekly level, and daily passes as well as all membership levels are very affordable. Youth, senior, and student rates are especially generous. Tanning is included. This accessible service is particularly outstanding because the gym is open 24/7 to all its members, starting at the weekly rate! A key fob is issued to each paid-up member at the front desk upon creating an account, and enables that member to come in whenever schedules permit, day or night.

South Town Gym’s goal “is to be the catalyst for change and success in the quality of life for the citizens of Grand and San Juan Counties. We believe that the excellent facility and equipment that we have assembled will help our members to achieve their ultimate fitness goals.” The quality of these offerings is high; Andrea is happy to report that two US Ski Team members and various Pro Rodeo members maintain their fitness in this gym.

There are five main rooms in the gym’s layout: the MMA (mixed martial arts area), the Main Weight Room, the Free Weights/Personal Training Area, the Dance Studio, Aerobics and Spinning Room, and the Women’s Only Room. This last room is very popular; it offers comfortable 24/7 security for women members. More fine service!

In these rooms are 22 state-of-the-art cardio fitness machines, a large selection of free weights and Cybex strength training machines, Physio balls, Bosu balls, plyometrics (extreme aerobic jump exercises), stability and agility equipment, spinning bikes, and 28 flat screen TVs. Lockers, showers, a sauna, and a supplement and energy bar are tucked in around the main rooms.

“Here at South Town Gym we believe everyone can improve their quality of life,” and to support this, a daily array of classes for all ages and goals is offered. These include crunch classes (spin/core training), HIIT (high intensity interval circuit training), strength training, Tibetan style Tai Chi, internal and external TiAiki Kung Fu, and boxing. Personal trainers are available.

Andrea stresses that classes are always evolving—yet more great service! She expects the gym to be offering yoga again soon, as well as a class to help those with Parkinson’s disease, called “Rock Steady Boxing.” This non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness program is reporting success nationally, and South Town is very happy to be able to offer it to the Moab community.

South Town Gym serves visitors as well as locals; its 24/7 accessibility enables everyone to work around their schedules, whether work or vacation! The gym honors insurance programs such as SilverSneakers, Silver&Fit, Renew Active, and SelectHealth.

Why wait any longer to improve your fitness? Now is the best time to get started! Head on down to South Town Gym and find the program that will work for you. The gym is located at 1070 South Highway 191. The front desk is open from 8am to 6pm Monday through Friday. Questions?
