The One Stop Event: Moab Adventure Center
By Linda Schmidt

The adventures in Moab are seemingly endless. Even with the internet it is not easy to discover all that is available and plan your trip. And if you show up in Moab with no particular plans, the choices can be bewildering. What to do? Stop in at the Moab Adventure Center (MAC), the one-stop shopping center for all that you could want or need for a tremendous and memorable Moab experience!

In 2003, Western River Expeditions, already well-known for their river trips on the Colorado and Green Rivers, saw an opportunity to open a Main Street booking office. Observing the growth of tourism and the expansion of adventure offerings in the Moab area, they decided to include these varied adventures in their new operation. The Moab Adventure Center was born and has itself become a Moab destination!

River expeditions are a primary focus of the MAC. Western River Expeditions has been running rivers since 1961, and currently offer an array of trips on the Colorado—the daily section, Westwater Canyon and Cataract Canyon, and Desolation Canyon on the Green River. These vary from half-day to multi-day adventures. Western also runs white water trips in the Grand Canyon, Idaho, Oregon, and most recently, Costa Rica.

Other water adventures that can be booked at the MAC are paddle boarding and scenic jet boat trips. Moving from the water to land to air, another impressive array of exciting activities presents itself! Differing levels of 4X4 trips can be had with Moab jeep rentals, Moab Hummer trips, and horseback riding. Still on the ground, visit Arches National Park on a morning or evening tour that combines sightseeing with short hikes. A combination of land and air can be experienced in canyoneering, rock climbing, the Moab Zip Line, and the Moab ropes course. Leaving the ground completely are hot air balloon rides and Moab air tours.

Inside the unique MAC structure is a large assortment of gear for the Moab adventurer. Just about everything needed for river trips, hiking gear, sports shoes and sandals, Camelbacks, good quality outdoor clothing and more are included in its exciting inventory.

Cort Wright, who became the MAC store manager in 2018, has worked for the MAC and Western in various positions since 2009. Engaging, knowledgeable, and interested in people, he is perfectly fitted for his position. His concern for Moab visitors includes the business’s careful observation of the Moab Adventure Center and Western River Expedition’s COVID-19 Mitigation & Operations Plan. This includes use of masks, gloves, daily temperature and pulse oximeter screening, and associated symptom questions for all participants. Social distancing has been enabled in all vehicles, and rigorous cleaning and disinfecting of all equipment is routinely implemented. Food handling on every trip meets or exceeds current restaurant food handling protocols. In addition, private trips may also be booked.

Cort says that the new season is up and running strongly, and he is happy to see visitors returning. Town is becoming increasingly busy: don’t miss your opportunity to experience all that Moab has to offer! Check out the Moab Adventure Center’s huge and excellent website for thorough details on all that is available from tours to accommodations. It has fascinating area info, and even an on-line offer for a free Insider’s Guide.
