BUSINESS HAPPENINGS - January 2022

Find All Your Sewing Fabrics, Notions at Canyonland Quilts
Shop Offers Variety of Classes
By Sharon Sullivan

Chyrrel Meyer turned a passion into a business when she opened Canyonland Quilts in June 2018. Meyer grew up doing a lot of hand-quilting as a child. She’d watch her mother sew, as well as her grandfather – a cabinet-maker who also quilted until the age of 97.

Canyonland Quilts sells everything you need to make your own quilted items. The shop stocks quality fabrics, sewing notions, threads, patterns, books and sewing machines – including longarm sewing machines to accommodate a king-sized quilt.

“Plus, there are fun gift things – gadgets for sewers,” Meyer said.

Perhaps you’re interested but don’t know how or where to begin? Canyonland Quilts teaches a variety of classes at the shop – see sidebar or check out the web site to see what classes are offered this winter. Among the offerings are “Grandma and Me” classes held on a Saturday each month.

“It’s for grandmas, moms, and kids – both boys and girls – to teach the next generation to sew and quilt,” Meyer said.
There are monthly project classes, too, that people can sign up for. This year, the theme is table-toppers with each month’s design a different pattern related to a holiday or season. Sewers can learn a lot of skills by working on small projects like these, Meyer said. The table-toppers are 36-by-36 inches long.

Canyonland Quilts will host a retreat January 19-22, with Carmen Geddess, of TenSisters Handicraft. The retreat will be held at the Moab Valley Inn, 711 S. Main St. Retreat-goers can choose five out of 15 different classes available that weekend.

In June, a national educator will come to the shop to teach how to use the longarm sewing machine. Individuals who purchase a longarm machine from Canyonland Quilts, receive a free set-up and training from Meyer, plus a 20% lifetime discount on everything in the store.

Canyonland Quilts is located at 11850 S. Hwy 191, building B7, inside the Moab Business Park, south of downtown Moab. Shop hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information visit: canyonlandquilts.com. Canyonland Quilts can be reached at 435-355-0358, or 435-668-7454.
