September brings shorter days, cooler evenings, and the first Art Walk of the fall season. On Saturday, September 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. Gallery Moab will feature the trio of Victoria Fugit, Sarah Hamingson, and Marsha Modine. These three artists were introduced to their favorite medium eight years ago in a pastel painting class taught by JC Borders. Since then, each has honed her skills and developed a distinctive style. All have shown their luminous pastel paintings at Moab Studio Tours, Plein Air Moab, and the Bighorn Gallery at Dead Horse Point State Park, as well as in art shows in western Colorado.
Victoria Fugit captures the spirit of wildlife and domestic animals set in sensitively rendered landscapes. She has been the driving force in developing Gallery Moab’s new website, and has fostered a relationship between the gallery and Sorrel River Ranch, where gallery artists demonstrate plein air painting to guests on weekends and have paintings on display for sale.
Sarah Hamingson was selected as the 2013 Community Artist in the Parks, during which time she was often seen painting outdoors, rain or shine, in Arches, Canyonlands, Natural Bridges, and Hovenweep national parks. Her forte is capturing the essence of the red rock, sweeping vistas and ever-changing light and weather of the canyon country. She will be featuring paintings of Canyonlands National Park at Art Walk in honor of the park’s 50th anniversary.
Marsha Modine is inspired to paint her inviting landscapes by the beauty she finds exploring the red rock arches and pinnacles surrounding Moab. Her creativity combined with her organizational skill and bookkeeping savvy are an invaluable asset to gallery operations.
Gallery Moab is a fine arts cooperative owned and operated by eighteen local artists who work in various media and styles. All share equally in the cost and duties of keeping the gallery open, painting in the window, and hosting visitors from all over the world. New works frequently grace the walls, replacing ones that have been sold and taken to new homes. The artists regularly rotate display spaces to give the gallery a fresh look and to give each artist a turn in the limelight.
Come in and browse our colorful space on Main Street, where you’ll find a wide variety of original creations, as well as prints and cards for sale. Join us to indulge your creative urges.
