GALLERY HAPPENINGS December 2014

Gallery Moab
By Sarah Hamingson

December is all about celebration, and we at Gallery Moab have a lot to celebrate and want to share that with you. We started (unofficially) about a year ago, and have been open as a business for almost a year. For those of you who run businesses in Moab, you know that’s cause for celebration! We couldn’t do it without our customers, patrons, and other supporters, so we’re viewing December as one big shout out to all of you!

One of my favorite Christmas events in Moab is the Light Parade, so I’m really excited that we’ll be doing one last Art Walk of 2014 at Gallery Moab that evening, December 6, from 6-9 p.m. While you’re out for the evening for the parade, stop by the Gallery, enjoy some hot drinks and food, and say hello to the artists at the Gallery. You’ll want to be there at 8:00 p.m., when we announce the winners of the prize drawing. As of press time, there were 5 pieces of art to be given away. You must be present to win.

Join us as we welcome as featured artists Gallery Moab’s two newest members, Deborah Hughes, a photographer, and Bonnie Bower, a wood carver. Asked to comment on her work, Deborah Hughes said, “I aim to create poem prints of extraordinary scenes or features found in the landscape using natural light and color, at times incorporating abstract compositions or alternative capture techniques.”

Bonnie Bower began carving in 1999. “It was love at first chip!” she exclaims. “I loved it from the moment I realized that I could create something really FUN out of a chunk of wood, and have not stopped carving since.” She’ll have Christmas ornaments and Santas along with her other folk art pieces.

Looking for something different this gift-giving season? The artists at Gallery Moab will be offering some small, affordably priced works in addition to the usual larger sizes. Have a budding artist on your list? Consider giving the gift of an art class. Tim Morse and Larry Christensen will be teaching classes at the Gallery this winter in watercolors and oil painting.

Artists will continue to paint at the Gallery throughout the month, so stop by to say hello and see what they’re doing Thursday through Sunday, from noon to 6 p.m.

Gallery Moab is located at 87 North Main Street.
