What is home? The place where you were born and grew up? The place where you return between travels? Or maybe it’s the place that grabs your heart and won’t let it go. Gallery Moab’s artists have settled here for many of these reasons, and celebrate love of our home landscape and community by creating a diverse variety of original art and artisan crafts to share with friends, neighbors and visitors.
Shari Michaud, our March Featured Artist, is displaying “Home Making, “ a small collection of still life paintings inspired by a set of vintage die cast Tootsietoy dollhouse furniture. The furniture was manufactured sometime between 1930 and 1948 and was graciously loaned to her from the estate of Ed and Artie Nettell. She used these symbolic trappings of domestic indoctrination to have fun exploring ways of conveying the power and influence wielded by today’s homemaker.
As a young woman Michaud said she fought against ever occupying a domestic household position, which she considered weak and meant for someone who couldn’t or wouldn’t aspire to something greater. Yet as an adult, who has since held numerous roles outside domesticity, she currently has the privilege to be a homemaker, at least part time, and now sees the position quite differently, arguing, “The home plays an integral role in our lives, and is one of the few places within our control where we can create a refuge, and find peace. Where our bodies and souls are nourished literally and figuratively. It’s where we gather with friends and family over a bottle (or two) of wine to solve all the world’s problems. It’s where we share, where we laugh, and where we love.” She now proudly takes charge of her home, and especially her kitchen. Among her many other talents she is an inspired “foodie“ and cook!
Michaud works in paint, clay, and collage, playing with words or thought-provoking, whimsical themes. She explains, ”I find fantastical, stylized environments can capture an essence and creative interpretation of a concept that can’t always be achieved with realism.”
On Friday, March 7, the gallery is hosting a reception from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. We invite visitors, friends and community members to come meet Michaud, enjoy her imaginative work, mingle with local artists and art lovers, and enjoy refreshments.
