GALLERY HAPPENINGS - August 2025
Lift Your Spirit at Gallery Moab
by Thea Nordling

Feeling wilted by the late summer heat? Step into Gallery Moab, a cooperative of local artists, to be invigorated by the magic this remarkable place inspires through the eyes, hearts, minds and hands of our talented artists. Each has a unique personal vision and style of expressing deep connection to this place we all love.

Throughout August our featured Guest Artist Bruce Hucko is exhibiting a collection of intriguing black and white photographs entitled Spiritus Resurgit. Hucko is an independent photographer for whom home is Moab and the Colorado Plateau. His photographic work appears exclusively in 11 nationally published books. Since 1978, he’s been lovingly known as Art Coach! to hundreds of Navajo, Pueblo and Moab children and their parents for his art education efforts.

Says Hucko about his choice of Spritus Resurgit (Latin for Spirit Rising) as the title for this exhibit,” Minor White wrote ‘No matter how slow the film, Spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer it has chosen.’ With this work I am leaning into that phrase. I’ve always believed that making a photograph is a conversation between myself, the subject and the thoughts I’m wanting to express. I believe we’re all part of one spirit. My portion has been diminished recently and now that it’s on the rise I’m seeing it, hearing it, and expressing it deeper than I ever have. These images are evidence of a personal resurrection and a desire to educate that photographs, like all good art, can and ought to be more than illustrations for a vacation story. If you find message or meaning in these works, I am happy, for it means we’ve shared - spirit.”

When not resolving images in his studio or out making new ones, Hucko can be found reading a good book, sharing good red wine with a friend, supporting young artists and doing what he can to protect our public lands.

The Gallery is hosting a reception for Hucko during Art Walk, Friday August 1, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Give your spirit a boost during these sultry dog days of summer by joining us to mingle with local artists and art enthusiasts and enjoy refreshments. While you’re here, browse the walls and shelves, and you just might find a perfect gift or memento, or that special piece of original art that sparks a personal connection with you. We offer a wide variety of original fine art and artisan crafts in different mediums to appeal to any taste and budget.

Open Sunday & Monday 12:00 – 3:00 p.m
Tuesday through Saturday 12:00 – 6:00 p.m

Moab Photography Symposium: Encore!
By Bruce Hucko

The Moab Photography Symposium is baaaaack!!!

Photographers flock to the Moab area from all over the world. It’s a destination for image makers from magazines, movies and countless workshop. For 15 years, and ending in 2018, the Moab Photography Symposium was Moab’s ONLY home-grown photographic event. It started as an outgrowth of Canyonlands Field Institute programming with the first, short weekend event featuring Tom Till, John Telford and Bruce Hucko. Owner/Director Bruce Hucko took it on, expanded it to 4 days then (he thought!) ended it after the 2018 event saying, “I think we did everything I’d hoped to,” but he is reviving it for September 2025 because, “well, I kept getting requests. People really missed the quality of education they received and the camaraderie Moab Photo Symposium created.”

Moab Photography Symposium 2025 is scheduled for September 25-28. Attendance is by pre-registration only and is limited to 63. MPS25 features a keynote by Colleen Miniuk and Last Word by Guy Tal. In between there are 6 feature presentations by Charlotte Gibb, Jennifer Renwick, David Kingham, Michael Gordon, Chuck Kimmerle and Bruce Hucko. Each presentation by these noted artists will concentrate on developing your personal vision and artistic philosophy with the guiding theme being “Inside the Photographer’s Mind.” Field workshops to sites on area BLM lands happen in the afternoon. They concentrate on technique, the elements and principles of art and composition. PhotoJAM is the two-evening event where participants show their work and everyone enjoys beverages and pizza! New for this year is the Group Picture Processing Soiree on the final morning and an ongoing Collectors Corner where everyone is invited to bring prints to trade or sell. The main event is complemented by the Terrific Trio Workshop taught by Miniuk, Kimmerle and Hucko starting the Sunday before. This is a more intense experience for 15 participants.

The Moab area is a great place to practice your photography. If you want more out of your photography and out of yourself, the Moab Photography Symposium is the place to get it. Read all the details and register at www.mps25.com
