Aretha Franklin to Inspire the Nation With “Carry The Flame” Song

The legendary Aretha Franklin will bring her classic style to the song “Carry The Flame” which will accompany the Olympic torch as it travels across America to the Opening Ceremony of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Franklin is the recipient of 15 Grammy Awards.

“We are honored to have Aretha Franklin bring her incredible talent to the song that embodies the essence of our Games, which is “Light the Fire Within,” said Mitt Romney, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 (SLOC). “This is a song many can identify with: To have a dream, to pursue it with courage and determination and, through these actions, to inspire and make a difference, not only in one’s own life, but in the lives of others.”

The song’s message embraces the idea that within each one of us is the ability to achieve greatness by carrying the flame of inspiration and, in doing so, inspiring those around us.

Karin Hendrickson wrote the 4-minute song in collaboration with Brock Walsh. Hendrickson is a candidate for a Masters in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University. Walsh has been writing and producing songs for some of the world’s most prestigious artists. The song debuted in Atlanta, Georgia on December 4 as the Olympic Torch Relay kicked off in Centennial Park. The song will be played in more than 110 community celebrations along the Olympic Torch Relay route.

Carry The Flame
Music and Lyrics by Hendrickson / Walsh
Performed by Aretha Franklin

A little boy said, “Dad, someday you’ll hear a crowd shout out for joy.
And they will see the hero in me that you said I’d find, If I’d just devote my heart and soul and mind.”

A little girl said, “Mama, I will be the greatest in the world.
And everyone will watch and wonder how I got so far. How that last lump of coal became a shining star.”

At last you’re here and now your wish is coming true. And there are children who are dreaming watching you.

Carry the Flame, with every step you take
Carry the Flame, what a difference you will make
Hold it high and let it shine
Light the way for those who come behind
Carry the Flame

No regrets, no turning back, no might-have-beens, you’re not there yet.
Now’s your chance to take your shot and see how far you go.
Not trying means that you will never know.
You take your place, desire burning in your eyes
But you’ve already won and that fire is your prize

Carry the Flame, with every step you take
Carry the Flame, what a difference you will make
Hold it high and let it shine
Light the way for those who come behind
Carry the Flame

Our dreams may be different, no two are quite alike
But if you look you’ll see that very fire in our eyes

Carry the Flame, with every step you take
Carry the Flame, may your courage never shake
If you keep it lit against the sky
You’ll rise to it however high you aim
Carry the Flame, with every step you take
Carry the Flame, what a difference you will make
Hold it high and let it shine
Light the way for those who come behind
Carry the Flame
