Moab Utah 2002 Committee plans Festival around Arrival of the Torch

The Moab Utah 2002 Committee is working with the community to arrange a festival around the arrival of the Olympic Torch to Utah. Moab is the first city in the state of Utah to receive the flame. The flame will enter the Moab community on February 4, 2002 and will continue through Utah from there. Moab is honored to be the first community to be highlighted in Utah and wants to show that enthusiasm by arranging a festival. A committee of local persons has been working on arrangement for many months and the following is a taste of what will be occurring.

On Friday evening, February 1st, the Grand County School District, under the supervision of Carl Dastrup, will be presenting a concert that is filled with songs of the Olympics and symbols of the meaning of the Olympics. On Saturday, some of the activities available are: jeep trips with the Red Rock 4-Wheel Club, guided mountain bike trips with local outfitters, field trips with the local Points and Pebbles Rock and Gem Club, a rod run with the Moab Rod Benders Club, visit the Terra Cotta Warrior exhibit, shop in the local stores, attend the bull event at the arena, participate in the Artwalk and more. The Canyonlands Film Society is planning an event, and there will be other activities forthcoming. On Sunday, which is Superbowl Sunday, local businesses will be having Super Bowl parties, the downtown shops will be open for shoppers and in the evening, there will be a fireworks display. On Monday morning, the arrival of the flame is the highlight. The Swanny City Park will be the site for free hot chocolate, entertainment and live viewing of the torch run. Most of the activities and events are contingent on the weather and some will occur despite the weather.

The Moab Utah 2002 Committee is inviting anyone that would like to be at Delicate Arch for the beginning of the torch run, and back downtown for the finale, to contact them. The committee is arranging shuttle rides to the park and each person will have to be registered in advance.

Anyone interested in more information, or in offering additional activities should contact the Chamber of Commerce at 435-259-7814. Also, details regarding times and locations will be forthcoming and can be seen by keeping an eye to www.discovermoab.com and click on the calendar button.
