October at Gallery Moab

What a joy to be outside savoring the rich fall colors, mellow light and cooler days of October! Spending a day out of doors with paints and easel is one of life’s greatest delights for many an artist. This month Gallery Moab will showcase the work of two accomplished plein air (in the open air) painters.

Gail Denton

Our Guest Artist Gail Denton is a Colorado-based oil painter who has participated in Moab’s Plein Air events for several years. This month she is showing a collection of her lively, colorful landscapes. She worked with textiles, natural dyes, natural fibers, weaving, spinning and surface design for twenty years, and eventually found that this background, coupled with her deep love of the outdoor life, made plein air painting a natural fit for her. Her work is influenced by Maynard Dixon, Edgar Payne, Jimmie Jones, Brad Holt, Doug Braithwaite and Lyn Boyer.

Water Is Life by Gail Denton

Denton invites experienced and budding artists to come “Shake, Rattle, and Roll.” with her in a mini-workshop. This short (1.5 hr.) exercise of cutting and pasting will explore color, shape, composition, and energy from a whole new perspective. She explains that you will “Shake it up, rattle it around and roll in the ecstasy of fresh insight. Paint like nobody’s watching!” Join her at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 9, 2021 at the Gallery Moab classroom. Limited to 8 participants. $10. Call or visit the gallery or call Peggy Harty at 435-220-0891 to sign up and get details.

By Antonio Savarese

Featured gallery artist Antonio Savarese expresses his life-long love of the Colorado Plateau landscape in both oils and pastels His paintings feature the region’s deserts, canyons, and mesas, its flora, and human-made features within it. Savarese honed his plein air skills as the 2019 Community Artist in the Parks, painting on-site at Arches, Canyonlands, Natural Bridges and Hovenweep national parks, and creates larger works in his Moab studio. He believes that a daily dose of scenery is the best form of medicine anyone—especially artists—can find. He says ”This is a place where, if one looks closely, they may see through the red rocks and into themselves, as nature intended.”
Art Walk resumes on Saturday, September 11. Gallery Moab will be open from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. for the event. Join us to enjoy a diverse selection of original, locally made fine art and artisan crafts and meet Hamingson and our other talented artists.

The 2021 International Quilt Show, sponsored by It’s Sew Moab, will display entries to its quilt challenge inspired by the theme “Dance!” A specially selected butterfly fabric must be incorporated into the front side of each 8” x 10” quilt. It’s always a surprise to see the imaginative approaches quilters take to solve these challenges. The entries will be on display at Gallery Moab during October. Please come in and vote for your favorite!
